12/16 Biology update and homework due 1/6

Hi folks,

First off, no class for the next two weeks due to the holidays.  Our next class will be on January 6 2017.  The Merriest of Holidays to everyone!!!

We are now at the point where we can see how genetic material from two parents intertwine to create an new and unique individual. This is the beginning of genetics. We used Punnett squares as a tool to see what kinds of combinations could be created from the parents genotypes. We will be doing more with genetics next week.


Homework for 1/6 is to get some practice with these Punnett squares.

Do questions 1 - 11 on the "Introduction Basic Genetics" .pdf.

Do questions 1 - 9 on the "Dihybrid Cross" .pdf.  I've included the answers to this one so that you can check your work.

12/9 Biology update and homework due 12/16

Hi folks,

We are now at the point where we can see how genetic material from two parents intertwine to create an new and unique individual. This is the beginning of genetics. We did a lab where we actually saw our own DNA and we did a survey of students to see what traits have been inherited.  We will be doing more with genetics next week.

No recording this week since much of the class was taken up with activities.

11/18 Biology Update and Homework due 12/2

Hi folks,

No Class next week since everyone's going to be working off their meals of biological macromolecules. (Turkey dinner. :) )

Today in bio we began to discuss cell division. We primarily covered mitosis and next class we will discuss meiosis.

For homework, I'd like you to read pages 150 - 159.
Do "Understanding Key Concepts" on page 166 #'s 5-15
Be sure to understand mitosis. You can bet I'm going to ask you to draw that on a quiz or two.

10/27 Biology update and homework due 11/4

Hi folks,

Today we moved on from protein synthesis to cells. We are slowly getting bigger as time goes on. We will get deeper into cells and cell structure next week. We also spent some time talking about seven characteristics all living things share.

Be sure to feel good about your three different cell drawings and the differences between prokaryotic, eukaryotic, plant and animal cells.

10/14 Biology Update and homework due 10/21

Today we spent time looking and some of the more detailed aspects of proteins. Next week we will finish off our macromolecule unit as we discuss nucleic acids.

Homework for this week is to take a look at this website and do the activity. We are going to veer off of the instructions on the site, however, in that instead of different groups looking at different macromolecules, I'd like you to answer the questions for all four of the macromolecules. Feel free to use the suggested web-sites, your notes, the book and whatever other resources you'd like to use.

10/7 Biology update and homework due 10/14

Hi folks,

Today we got a bit more into the "nitty-gritty" of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. Next week we will do a bit more with proteins and discuss nucleic acids. This will lead us into our next block, transcription and translation of DNA.

For homework next week:

Using your new knowledge, see if you can find 3 things that would be a good representative of something containing lipids, something containing nucleic acids, something containing proteins and something containing carbohydrates. 3 things for each molecule so 12 things all together. These need to be things you can see/touch around you. (Hint…look in your fridge… :) )

9/30 Biology Update and homework due 10/7

Hi folks,

Today we took a general outline view of the four biological molecules. We looked at some examples, their basic purposes and different subcategories for each molecule. Next week we will get into more of the details of each molecule.

Now, by the way, is a great time to begin your flash card collection. Draw each monomer and functional group on one side and the name of it on the other. Also, put the vocabulary words on your flash cards to study them as well.
